Sadiq Khan has announced that he wants to release land from London's Green Belt for building on. This is a shocking U-turn on the promise he made previously to protect our Green Belt.
What's more, he intends to use this precious green space to build inappropriate blocks of flats. Reform voted with Labour and backed these plans on 5th June 2025.
"If family-sized accommodation is code for 3-bed semis [...] there's probably not going to be much of that built"
Sadiq Khan's Deputy Mayor, 9th June 2025
Once Sadiq Khan has got his hands on our green belt, he won't stop there. Green spaces right across Croydon could be at risk - from Hutchinson's Bank in New Addington, to Ashburton Park, Wandle Park or even South Norwood Country Park.
Since coming into office in 2022, I have made it my mission to protect and enhance Croydon’s green spaces. I have opened several new playgrounds across all parts of the Borough, re-opened the Waddon Ponds viewing platforms, put a park ranger back in South Norwood Country Park, invested in a perimeter path in Grange Park, and more. I’ve also changed Croydon’s planning rules to better protect our green spaces from inappropriate developments.
Let me be clear: I fully oppose Labour’s plans, and I will fight them every step of the way.
Other parties are fine with Sadiq Khan's plans.
