College Green - for so long abandoned under Labour thanks to their failed Brick By Brick scheme - is set to undergo a major transformation as part of Croydon’s wider Town Centre Vision, with plans to deliver a new sociable, accessible and vibrant public space at the heart of the cultural quarter.
The regeneration project, funded through the Council’s Growth Zone programme, will see the currently unused land between Fairfield Halls and Croydon College opened up to the public. It will improve connectivity between East Croydon Station and the town centre while creating a welcoming green space for residents, visitors and businesses.
Proposals include a children’s play area, a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), picnic areas, cafe terraces, and extensive new greening with wildflowers and trees. The plans have been designed to be inclusive and accessible, supporting Mayor Perry’s priority of creating a town centre that attracts people to live, work, invest and spend time in Croydon.
A public exhibition will take place at Croydon College from Monday 13th to Saturday 18th October, 10am–4pm daily, with a late opening on Tuesday 14th October until 8pm. Project staff will be available at set times during the week, and an online version of the exhibition will also be available on the Croydon Urban Room website.
The scheme forms part of the wider Fairfield Masterplan, with designs by MICA Architects shaped around creating a sociable, inclusive and playful public space. A planning application is due to be submitted later this year.
College Green is one of ten town centre projects now underway, which also include improvements to Minster Green and a new pedestrian crossing on Wellesley Road.
“Multiple projects are taking shape to improve connectivity and public spaces in our town centre, and the re-landscaping of College Green is a key part of this.
I remain committed to delivering a pleasant green space in our cultural quarter for all our residents. Do visit the public exhibition to see the designs in detail and have your say.”
