After years of neglect for Croydon's green spaces under Labour, Mayor Jason Perry has successfully doubled the number of parks in the borough awarded the prestigious Green Flag.
Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, Friends of Parks groups, council officers and partners, four parks – Coulsdon Memorial Ground, Happy Valley, Wandle Park and Wettern Tree Garden – have all been recognised as some of the best green spaces in the UK.
The awards, presented by the charity Keep Britain Tidy, come after significant investment in Croydon’s parks, including improved grass-cutting schedules, upgraded playgrounds, and new pathways to make the spaces more accessible for all residents.
With over 120 parks and green spaces across the borough, Croydon provides vital areas for exercise, relaxation and community wellbeing. Investment in these spaces is a key priority for the Mayor to make Croydon cleaner, safer and healthier.
“Thank you to everyone who has played a part in looking after Croydon’s parks and green spaces.
“Doubling the number of Green Flags flying across the borough is a great achievement. To be great places they need a lot of love and care, and we are so thankful for our many Friends Groups and volunteers who support our officers and partners and work together to keep them looking great.
“Our parks and green spaces make Croydon special, and it’s a great achievement that more of them have now been awarded with Green Flags.
“We will continue to work hard and invest in our parks to help restore pride in Croydon.”
– Jason Perry, Conservative Mayor of Croydon
