Croydon's Conservative Mayor Jason Perry is calling for GPS ankle tagging for persistent shoplifters in Croydon — creating exclusion zones around our high streets, deterring repeat offending, and allowing the Police to act immediately when conditions are breached.

There’s clear evidence it works:

  • Sussex Police are already tagging prolific shoplifters, with early results showing strong deterrence and faster enforcement.
  • A Ministry of Justice / Met Police pilot for high-harm theft offenders cut reoffending by around 20%, using GPS data to track and disrupt criminal behaviour.

Mayor Jason Perry wants to be the first London pilot, and he has written to Mayor Sadiq Khan to urge him to bring a scheme to Croydon.
